Thank you for sharing this video with us! The story touched my heart and I find this cartoon very beautiful and powerful. Probably everyone will understand the meaning in their own way, but personally I see a “gray mass” that doesn’t recognize people who differ from them. At the moment when the “white sheet” opened the light for “black souls”, it seemed to me that this very light would purify them. It is striking that after the deification of the same “outcast”, they found a new one without having learned the lesson. I even thought that the “black sheet” was a disguised “white sheet” that came down to check this “gray mass”. Unfortunately, people, as well as these sheets, are used to condemning and discussing "different people". This cartoon is very vital, causing a storm of emotions and forcing you to comprehend your behavior. I would especially like to mention the melody, which perfectly fit into the production. It was done brilliantly and I can't even imagine how much time and creative energy it took to create it.
This short animation can be interpreted in different ways. Someone may see in it the story of Jesus, someone the story of Danko, and some - even themselves. What I see is the gray crowd that doesn't want to tolerate anyone different and unique, trying to make them as gray as everyone else around. Till finally destroying them. So it shows the intolerance to different opinions, hatred for someone who stands out and in the end how it is easier to worship the dead hero. But we also can see how the society never learns. In the final scene there is a new outsider, new target. Same tragic cycle ones again. Thank you for this experience!
Thank you very much for sharing with us! I found this cartoon highly impressive, simple yet very powerful. A story about an individual vs a 'gray mass' - the majority of our society. It shows how intolerate and prejudiced people can be against those, who have their own 'ME'and differ from the general mass of people. The moment the gray paper creatures tortured the white one without a second thought given was very tragic, almost heartbreaking. Unfortunately, the things showed in this cartoon are not anything new or uncommon for modern society and people do just the same, especially today, in the era of social media. The main idea of this video was quite clear but what impressed me more is the fact that the whole idea was given throughout a 9-minute video without any words being said or special effects used in it. The production is very simple and the effect of this simplicity is astonishing. I wish more people could see it and think about their actions so as the tragedies like the one showed in the video wouldn't happen in our world anymore
An unusual view of familiar things is something that cannot be taken away from Harry Bardin. To put a huge meaning into a 9-minute cartoon in which everything is clear without words is an achievable task only for a talented person.
In the cartoon "Adagio" everyone will draw their own parallels. For someone, the religious motive of the work will be clearly expressed, someone, perhaps, will see his idol in a white crane, or in a gray chick - himself.
In fact, the cartoon largely reflects our society. This is a gray faceless crowd. Everyone is equal as a selection. As soon as someone appears who is somehow different from others, they tend to either make him the same as themselves, or, if it does not work out, get rid of him. Even if he once helped this crowd. Because you can't be different. The crowd can't stand it. And only after ruining that bright, sincere, innocent, honest, the gray mass realizes that it was wrong. But it's too late to change anything, it remains only to remember, sigh, deify, pray…
But often the lesson is not learned, and the same rake hits the forehead again.
People forget that they are people first of all. And then they are black or white, Russians or Tajiks, Christians or Muslims. Everyone is divided into many heaps, each of which lives according to its own laws and rules. And outsiders have no place in their world.
