As soon as I finished watching this wonderful cartoon, I immediately started looking for information about the director and found out that the work was made by Harry Bardin, whose cartoons such as "Cheburaska", "Flying ship", "In the blue sea, in the white foam..." and others were watched by everyone in Russia.
I must admit, that watching this absolutely strident in its effect on the viewer cartoon, I experienced a strong emotional excitement.
To my mind, the cartoon is about good and evel, the crowd's rejection of something new, different from them, and this applied to both White and Black. We can see, that even if White helped them, he had been, at first, picked on, and then beaten to death just because he wasn't like anybody. The same had happened with Black. But I believe that the author wanted to show that even a terrible gray crowd cannot defile and befoul what is permeated with purity, light and unconditional love.
The Director had put a lot of meaning into a nine-minute film in which everything was clear without any words. In fact, the cartoon largely reflects our society. It's a gray, faceless crowd. As soon as there appears someone who is different from others, they try to either make him the same as themselves, or, if they can't, they just get rid of him. Even if he once helped this crowd. Just because you can't be different. The crowd can't stand it. And only after ruining that bright, sincere, innocent, honest creature, the gray mass understands that what they did was wrong. But, unfortunately, it is too late to change anything, it remains only to remember, sigh and pray...
Nowadays people forget that they are people first. And then they are black or white, European or Asian, Christian or Muslim. Today each human being lives by its own laws and rules. And outsiders have no place in their world. After having watched this short film, I felt a lot of bitterness. This film is worth watching at least just for the sake of some enlightenment for yourself. Perhaps, it will hurt someone, change someone's life, someone's ideas. But the main thing you should never forget is not to be in a crowd. Don't be gray. After all, we are all unique in our own way.
It is a beautiful short film with deep meaning, which is clear to everyone even without words. Paper images and music only enhance the impression of the cartoon. I believe the plot of the cartoon tells about the appearance of “another” in the crowd, someone who is unlike everyone else, and shows the behavior of the today’s society. It was enough for the author to use only colored paper to reveal the whole point of the society, its cruelty, its inability to except something new. The gray mass don’t want to admit that one who is different from the majority, they don’t want any changes and therefore they will do everything to get rid of the “White” In the cartoon, we see how gray cranes kick and beat him, first children do it, and then adults, but the difference is that adults do it consciously. Even though they follow the “White” and he helps them to survive the storm, in the end everyone turns away from him as he hasn’t become like everyone else and only at the very end, when he is beaten to death, the gray cranes see him in another way. But they miss their chance to change and become better, they remain the same gray mass. I am sure this happens in our society, at first people do not recognize someone and only after a while they want to look up to him. I was greatly impressed by this short film and the author was able to convey a simple truth in a creative and unusual manner. Pery Kurbanova
When I began watching the short film "Adagio" I think that it is not interesting as it is black-and-white. But as soon as I realized the deep meaning of this wonderful cartoon I was very impressed. The creator of «Adagio» was able to give us an excellent opportunity to watch the way some people are treated in our society, those who do not look like us, who have different colour of skin, different religion or just because they are a bit overweight or they are not as attractive as others. I think that one of the main problems exposed within this cartoon is bullying as we can clearly see how such kind of people I described above are picked on in this cartoon though they always want to help and support other people. This cartoon shows us that no matter what such kind of people do, the will be always «strangers» or «outsiders» in their community. It is also important to take into account the fact that this cartoon was released in 2000 anyway it remains relevant for all of us because this problem will always exist in human society. I think that this cartoon is worth watching as it shows us once again that it is inappropriate to treat other members of society as they are treated in this short film.
Today I watched a short film "Adagio"and was deeply impressed by its message. In nine minutes of this film, I saw the crowd swallowing individuality. I know that every person is born with great value - a unique personality. But we can lose that value in the crowd. Yes, as soon as a person gets into the crowd, nothing remains of his personality.
After all, a crowd is not just a crowd of people. It is a whole organism. She lives with passions and emotions. And it absorbs the individuality of everyone who gets into it. The general mood infects and deprives part of your own mind. A person in a crowd is ready to take actions, and to do them immediately, but not of their own free will, but because the bulk of people decided so.
The crowd doesn't need the truth. She likes illusion and delusion more. It makes people think and feel very differently than they have done before. Lost in the crowd, a person loses his individuality. Also in this short film, we see how the crowd acts when it comes face to face with a person with atypical views for the crowd. The crowd consumes individuality. It is a pity that we do not give publicity to such important topics and they will remain the usual unresolved problems in society.
The cartoon is short, almost all black and white, takes only 10 minutes, but prompts very deep reflections. The wonderful music of Remo Giazzotto "Adagio in G minor", better known as "Adagio" by T. Albinoni, sounds there. The music is combined with a very interesting plot. This plot is still so original revealed! Finding answers to the eternal questions of life is always interesting. And G. Bardin's searches give us ambiguous answers. Everyone can delve into these searches as much as their horizons, their life experience and associations with life allow. The cartoon characters are memorable, although none of them say anything, but this is for the best. To the music you think so well!
In fact, this is a story about a tragedy: people are cruel, they accepted innovations only after they killed their creator. But social intolerance, envy and misunderstanding gave rise to black consequences. Here we see not only a political parable, but also a picture of morality, rotten moral foundations and human nature. This work is literally filled with feelings and sincerity.
I associate these paper birds with people. A mass of people who can hardly move forward in the dark, overcoming obstacles. But suddenly there is someone who is different from them, the white crow, who helps them overcome this test and "saves" them.
When all is over and there is peace, the black birds begin to study the white bird and try to turn it into the same as them. They start to dirty it (it can be humiliations, insults, as it is not like them).
They see that it doesn't work on him, and he still remains clean. And then they attack him to break him (they use physical force, that is, they beat him up in a crowd). But all this is in vain, because even though he was dirty, even though he was torn, it does not affect him and he remains as he really is, without turning into the same black birds as they are.
Eventually, the black birds attack him again and kill him. This is the end, they did everything in their power, but they could not break it and change it.
Next, we see a picture of how it "resurrects", turning into a clean, crystal-white sheet of paper. It returns to its former form, soaring up into the heavens, illuminating everything around and filling the whole world with light, and then disappears into the heavens.
I think this picture was a kind of projection on Jesus Christ, his mission to save people, his betrayal by these same people, his resurrection and ascension to the Lord. (But I may be wrong)
I have always been struck by the human ability to express one's thoughts through art. My dad always tells me that art does not call for words. I guess it was only today that I realized what he means.
Adagio is a good example of how the author conveyed the whole essence of human existence without words. The author of this cartoon, like any artist, armed with nothing but his talent, created a real masterpiece. It may seem that everything is as simple as black and white. But, as I have already mentioned, the conflict of these colorful little men reflects all of humanity. Since ancient times, people have been intolerant of dissent. It was punished in different ways: ignoring, ridicule, beatings, and sometimes executions. But experience shows that those who were not afraid to voice their opinions were right and found support, even if it took many years, sometimes even centuries. Courage and dissent give birth to geniuses. Aristotle, Caesar, Copernicus, Galileo, Joan of arc, Curie-Sklodowska, and many others.
Despite the fact that this cartoon lasts at most ten minutes, it provides the viewer with a range of emotions: hatred, tolerance, love, determination, thirst for victory, misunderstanding... Everyone will find something different in it.
As for me, I am impressed by the very transfer of meaning and its combination with classical music. I can't help but be astonished that the author tried to convey such a complex concept through paper men and coped with this task.
A poor white bird who helped grey birds to survive was bullied. The grey birds attemped a few times to crack him/her but they couldnt. HE/She rased up to the sky and made them realize they were wrong. This video reveales all discrimination and hate situations which actually happen in our society.
People dont like those who differs from them. They prefer to humiliate and excruciate but not accept them in the society.I think its very sad. We all know everyone is different and there is actually no one who would be absolute copy of you. That's why we must admit that bulluing and violence are serious human disease and we are to prevent such kind of cases.
I'm pacifist myself. I call everyone around me to be more tolerent and understanding.Human life is preceless and should respect and support those who differs.
